Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
