Per information released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have perished during detention beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has indicated that the true toll is probably considerably larger, as a result of many of disappeared individuals in Gaza.

“Although we are providing evidence for a greater figure of fatalities than once estimated, this is not the entire story,” he said. “We are sure that there are still people who perished in confinement that we have not identified.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified official information shows that the largest portion of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who died in detention were ordinary citizens, according to a parallel investigation.

By May of the current year, a armed services record tracking all combatants in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 listed people, documented just 21 fatalities in detention. By that point, 65 Gazans from Gaza had died in jail.

Prison Situation

“While these policies continue to be enforced, every Palestinian in custody is at peril, even the those in good health, even the youth who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Some deaths in detention have been widely reported, such as a senior hospital director who died in confinement after four months in detention.

A detainee incarcerated with the victim stated that he was brought to the yard by prison staff just prior to his death, visibly injured and unclothed from the lower body. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. Detention administrators and armed services provided analysts with the figure of deaths in confinement, and basic other details including the facility where they died, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, mainly people from Gaza, researchers could not to connect the minimal data provided by officials to a casualty registered by human rights groups, by means of testimony from freed prisoners or coverage in the press.
